“The prime minister promised to discuss the matter with the home minister (Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar) and come to a decision,” Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said in a statement here today.

Earlier, the MIC president held a 30-minute discussion with Abdullah at the latter’s office, to seek the immediate release of the five, dubbed the ‘Hindraf 5’.

Parti Keadilan Rakyat information chief Tian Chua said Anwar, who is also PKR advisor, wanted to impress upon PAS leaders, especially its spiritual leader Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat and party president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang that Muslim MPs would not be sidelined if the PR gains power.

“We have to do this before proceeding to the next course of action,” he said without revealing what the next course of action would be.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 23 — Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, like his cousin, Education Minister Datuk Hishammuddin Hussein, are “bangsawan” (or aristocratic) politicians. To outsiders, it would appear that their rise through Umno has been charmed. In reality, their rise was propelled by a combination of lineage, “noblesse oblige”, education, the personal wealth linked to their family networks (it’s safe to say that they know or have connections to everyone of political or economic consequence), glamour and the deft management of party politics.

At their best, they can be the most racially inclusive of figures: cosmopolitan, urbane and well-educated. In this respect, they reflect the way modern Malay royals have themselves become ineluctably “Malay-sian”, with royal palaces bestowing Datukships on the socially ambitious of all races.

At their worst, the “bangsawan” politicians can be deeply conservative, resistant to change and overly cautious. In the case of Najib, his continuing refusal to endorse and promote the reform agenda is undermining his own career.

Sept 23 – Today the ball is back in Pakatan Rakyat’s court.

Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had served up his latest volley last Thursday, asking Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to call for an emergency sitting of Parliament to table a motion of no confidence in the latter’s administration.

Abdullah duly rejected the idea the same afternoon but the PR leaders have decided to wait until today’s latest deadline to expire before deciding on their next move.

GEORGE TOWN, Sept 23 – Former Bukit Tambun assemblyman Lai Chew Hock’s wife died after being stabbed during a robbery at their home in Nibong Tebal last night.

Thor Joo Lee, 46, who was stabbed in the abdomen, chest and shoulder, died en route to the hospital.

Lai, 44, said he heard his wife driving into the house compound on her return from their petrol kiosk at about 11.20pm yesterday.

“I went out to the balcony and saw a man following her. He tried to grab her bag but my wife put up a fight.

“I shouted at him and he stabbed my wife before climbing over the gate and jumping on a motorcycle ridden by an accomplice,” Lai said at the Penang Hospital today.

PUTRAJAYA, Sept 24 — The price of petrol and diesel will be reduced by 10 sen to RM2.45 and RM2.40 per litre respectively beginning tomorrow, according to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi today.

He said the retail price of RON92 petrol will also be reduced from RM2.40 to RM2.30 per litre.

Abdullah disclosed this in a media statement read by Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Shahrir Abdul Samad, here.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 24 – The Sodomy II trial of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has been postponed yet again, after Sessions Court judge S.M. Komathy Suppiah ordered a two-week recess so she can decide on whether to allow the prosecution’s application to transfer the case to the High Court.

She is set to deliver the decision on October 7.

At the previous hearing on Sept 10, Senior Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Datuk Yusof Zainal Abiden, submitted a certificate of transfer to move the Sodomy II trial to the High Court.

KUCHING, Sept 24 — The Election Court today dismissed with costs a petitition challenging the election of DAP vice-chairman Chong Chieng Jen as the Bandar Kuching Member of Parliament in the March 8 general election.

In dismissing the petition, Justice Datuk Clement Allan Skinner declared that Chong, 37, was duly elected as the Bandar Kuching MP as no corrupt practice had been proven to have been committed by him or with his knowledge and consent as alleged by voter Kho Whai Phiaw, 64.

Those writings – a heady brew of facts, innuendos, speculation and hearsay – have now landed the Malaysia-Today news portal editor two years in the Kamunting Detention Camp, sparking outrage for most and relief for those at the receiving end of his scathing articles.

His detention is ostensibly for articles that have ridiculed Islam, Malaysia’s official religion, leading the police to recommend incarceration under the Internal Security Act. “His articles could arouse anger among Muslims,” Home Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar was quoted as saying by local newspapers.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 24 – The government and Umno are no longer viable and all Malaysians must come together to rectify the “dangerous situation” the country is in, former finance minister Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah said yesterday.

“The government, in its present form, and under the present leadership, led by the party to which I have given my life, are now structurally and inherently incapable of providing the direction and confidence that the country needs,” he said in a statement yesterday.

However he is confident that the Pakatan Rakyat will soon form the federal government but did not provide any deadline.

SEPT 24 – I write this as a Malaysian, as someone who, over 47 years of political life, has had the privilege of playing some small part in the formation our country, the building of its institutions, and our achievement of a degree of economic sufficiency. I write out of deep concern about the present state of our country.

In the lives of nations as of individuals, there come moments of profound possibility, when the potential for self-transcendence and for self-destruction are simultaneously present.

As before some critical examination in our youth, we come to the daunting realisation that we hold our future in our hands, when how we will fare many years hence, and whether we shall flourish or languish, will depend on how we conduct ourselves now, in this small window of time.

Opposition wants to acquire Kamunting camp to end ISA

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 24 — Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng last night floated the possibility of Perak acquiring the Kamunting ISA detention camp as a start to ending the tough security law.

Lim, himself an ISA detainee in the 1987 crackdown, said the Pakatan Rakyat states can start a donation drive among Malaysians to help acquire the colonial-era camp in northern Perak.

“The state can acquire land for two reasons; economic development and for public purposes, but we have to study the law first,” Lim told the Abolish ISA forum held at the Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall here.

Dr Mahathir still wants it his way

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 24 — After Datuk Seri Najib Razak met Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad last week, he was hopeful that the sniping from the sidelines against the party leadership would stop.

The Deputy Prime Minister discussed current political developments and the transition plan and pointed out that it could all become pear-shaped for Umno if animosity between its top names continued to fester.

Najib did not get a commitment that the verbal volleys from Dr Mahathir would cease but he was hopeful. He was wrong.

Yesterday, PKR information chief, Tian Chua reportedly said that the federal opposition has been negotiating with Abdullah through intermediaries; the Prime Minister later issued a denial.

“I am not aware of any negotiations taking place between Pakatan Rakyat and the Prime Minister-statements made yesterday suggesting that a line of communication was open were misinformed,” said Anwar in a statement.

However he is confident that the Pakatan Rakyat will soon form the federal government but did not provide any deadline.

SEPT 24 – I write this as a Malaysian, as someone who, over 47 years of political life, has had the privilege of playing some small part in the formation our country, the building of its institutions, and our achievement of a degree of economic sufficiency. I write out of deep concern about the present state of our country.

In the lives of nations as of individuals, there come moments of profound possibility, when the potential for self-transcendence and for self-destruction are simultaneously present.

As before some critical examination in our youth, we come to the daunting realisation that we hold our future in our hands, when how we will fare many years hence, and whether we shall flourish or languish, will depend on how we conduct ourselves now, in this small window of time.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 24 — Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng last night floated the possibility of Perak acquiring the Kamunting ISA detention camp as a start to ending the tough security law.

Lim, himself an ISA detainee in the 1987 crackdown, said the Pakatan Rakyat states can start a donation drive among Malaysians to help acquire the colonial-era camp in northern Perak.

“The state can acquire land for two reasons; economic development and for public purposes, but we have to study the law first,” Lim told the Abolish ISA forum held at the Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall here.

SEPT 24 – Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi is, in one respect at least, no different from his predecessor Dr Mahathir Mohamad. He claims to represent change, but there has been precious little.

Instead of moving his country forward by allowing genuine democracy and rule of law, he has given priority to his party’s battle to maintain its grip on power. The situation, for Malaysia’s sake, cannot continue.

Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim appears in court today to face sodomy allegations, just as he did 10 years ago. There are, again, suspicions the prosecution is politically motivated. The Internal Security Act, the law that allows detention without trial for up to two years, has been used this month to again intimidate and silence critics. Parti Keadilan Rakyat information chief Tian Chua said Anwar, who is also PKR advisor, wanted to impress upon PAS leaders, especially its spiritual leader Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat and party president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang that Muslim MPs would not be sidelined if the PR gains power.

“We have to do this before proceeding to the next course of action,” he said without revealing what the next course of action would be.

KUALA LUMPUR, 24 Sept – The Sessions Court here will decide on  Oct 7 whether to allow or reject the prosecution’s application to transfer Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s sodomy case to the High Court for trial.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 23 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has promised to consider the MIC appeal for the release of the five Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) leaders detained under the Internal Security Act (ISA) since Dec 13, last year.

“The prime minister promised to discuss the matter with the home minister (Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar) and come to a decision,” Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said in a statement here today.

Earlier, the MIC president held a 30-minute discussion with Abdullah at the latter’s office, to seek the immediate release of the five, dubbed the ‘Hindraf 5’.

Anwar to know on October 7 if case to be transferred to High Court
KUALA LUMPUR, 24 Sept – The Sessions Court here will decide on  Oct 7 whether to allow or reject the prosecution’s application to transfer Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s sodomy case to the High Court for trial.

Judge S.M.Komathy Suppiah needs two weeks to consider the submissions and authorities cited by both parties.

Anwar, 60, is charged with voluntarily committing carnal intercourse against the order of nature with his former aide, Mohamad Saiful Bukhari Azlan, 23, at Unit 11-5-1, Desa Damansara Condominium, Jalan Setiakasih, Bukit Damansara between 3.01pm and 4.30pm on June 26.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 23 — Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today met up with PAS leaders in an effort to convince them that PAS members of parliament (MPs) would not be marginalised should the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) form the next federal government.

Parti Keadilan Rakyat information chief Tian Chua said Anwar, who is also PKR advisor, wanted to impress upon PAS leaders, especially its spiritual leader Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat and party president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang that Muslim MPs would not be sidelined if the PR gains power.

“We have to do this before proceeding to the next course of action,” he said without revealing what the next course of action would be.

SEPT 24 – I write this as a Malaysian, as someone who, over 47 years of political life, has had the privilege of playing some small part in the formation our country, the building of its institutions, and our achievement of a degree of economic sufficiency. I write out of deep concern about the present state of our country.

In the lives of nations as of individuals, there come moments of profound possibility, when the potential for self-transcendence and for self-destruction are simultaneously present.

As before some critical examination in our youth, we come to the daunting realisation that we hold our future in our hands, when how we will fare many years hence, and whether we shall flourish or languish, will depend on how we conduct ourselves now, in this small window of time.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 24 — Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng last night floated the possibility of Perak acquiring the Kamunting ISA detention camp as a start to ending the tough security law.

Lim, himself an ISA detainee in the 1987 crackdown, said the Pakatan Rakyat states can start a donation drive among Malaysians to help acquire the colonial-era camp in northern Perak.

“The state can acquire land for two reasons; economic development and for public purposes, but we have to study the law first,” Lim told the Abolish ISA forum held at the Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall here.

SEPT 24 – Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi is, in one respect at least, no different from his predecessor Dr Mahathir Mohamad. He claims to represent change, but there has been precious little.

Instead of moving his country forward by allowing genuine democracy and rule of law, he has given priority to his party’s battle to maintain its grip on power. The situation, for Malaysia’s sake, cannot continue.

Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim appears in court today to face sodomy allegations, just as he did 10 years ago. There are, again, suspicions the prosecution is politically motivated. The Internal Security Act, the law that allows detention without trial for up to two years, has been used this month to again intimidate and silence critics. These are tactics Dr Mahathir used so effectively to hold on to power. But Malaysia has, surely, moved on from those days.

SEPT 24 – Raja Petra Kamaruddin holds almost nothing sacred and has had almost everyone scared with his writings.

That writings – a heady brew of facts, innuendos, speculation and hearsay – has now landed the Malaysia Today news portal editor two years in the Kamunting Detention Camp, sparking outrage for most and relief for those at the end of his scathing articles.

His detention is ostensibly for articles that have ridiculed Islam, Malaysia’s official religion, leading the police to recommend incarceration under the Internal Security Act. “His articles could arouse anger among Muslims,” Home Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar was quoted as saying by local newspapers.

Opposition wants to acquire Kamunting camp to end ISA

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 24 — Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng last night floated the possibility of Perak acquiring the Kamunting ISA detention camp as a start to ending the tough security law.

Lim, himself an ISA detainee in the 1987 crackdown, said the Pakatan Rakyat states can start a donation drive among Malaysians to help acquire the colonial-era camp in northern Perak.

“The state can acquire land for two reasons; economic development and for public purposes, but we have to study the law first,” Lim told the Abolish ISA forum held at the Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall here.

Anwar to know on October 7 if case to be transferred to High Court
KUALA LUMPUR, 24 Sept – The Sessions Court here will decide on  Oct 7 whether to allow or reject the prosecution’s application to transfer Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s sodomy case to the High Court for trial.

Judge S.M.Komathy Suppiah needs two weeks to consider the submissions and authorities cited by both parties.

Anwar, 60, is charged with voluntarily committing carnal intercourse against the order of nature with his former aide, Mohamad Saiful Bukhari Azlan, 23, at Unit 11-5-1, Desa Damansara Condominium, Jalan Setiakasih, Bukit Damansara between 3.01pm and 4.30pm on June 26.

Yesterday, PKR information chief, Tian Chua reportedly said that the federal opposition has been negotiating with Abdullah through intermediaries; the Prime Minister later issued a denial.

“I am not aware of any negotiations taking place between Pakatan Rakyat and the Prime Minister-statements made yesterday suggesting that a line of communication was open were misinformed,” said Anwar in a statement.

However he is confident that the Pakatan Rakyat will soon form the federal government but did not provide any deadline.

Instead of moving his country forward by allowing genuine democracy and rule of law, he has given priority to his party’s battle to maintain its grip on power. The situation, for Malaysia’s sake, cannot continue.

Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim appears in court today to face sodomy allegations, just as he did 10 years ago. There are, again, suspicions the prosecution is politically motivated. The Internal Security Act, the law that allows detention without trial for up to two years, has been used this month to again intimidate and silence critics. These are tactics Dr Mahathir used so effectively to hold on to power. But Malaysia has, surely, moved on from those days.

SEPT 24 – With each passing day, it gets clearer that Umno politicians are clueless about what Malaysians desire.

Everyone of them – Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, Najib Abdul Razak, Muhyiddin Yassin, Syed Hamid Albar, Muhammad Muhammad Taib, Hishammuddin Hussein – speaks about the need for the ruling party to adapt to the new environment and aspirations of better educated Malaysians.

Samy Vellu: PM to consider release of Hindraf 5

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 23 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has promised to consider the MIC appeal for the release of the five Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) leaders detained under the Internal Security Act (ISA) since Dec 13, last year.

“The prime minister promised to discuss the matter with the home minister (Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar) and come to a decision,” Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said in a statement here today.

Earlier, the MIC president held a 30-minute discussion with Abdullah at the latter’s office, to seek the immediate release of the five, dubbed the ‘Hindraf 5’.

‘We must unite to overcome political and economic crisis’

SEPT 24 – I write this as a Malaysian, as someone who, over 47 years of political life, has had the privilege of playing some small part in the formation our country, the building of its institutions, and our achievement of a degree of economic sufficiency. I write out of deep concern about the present state of our country.

In the lives of nations as of individuals, there come moments of profound possibility, when the potential for self-transcendence and for self-destruction are simultaneously present.

As before some critical examination in our youth, we come to the daunting realisation that we hold our future in our hands, when how we will fare many years hence, and whether we shall flourish or languish, will depend on how we conduct ourselves now, in this small window of time.
